Knowing how to motivate your workforce makes you a powerful manager. Here are three things you should know if you want to become better at motivation:

• What level of motivation is needed?
You can’t expect every employee to give 110 percent all the time. Analyze the work your people do so you can set realistic priorities.

• What motivates each employee? Get to know your people well enough to understand what needs they’re trying to satisfy at work—financial, emotional, etc.

• What can you do?
Think about what you have to offer as motivation: praise, time off, mentoring, and so forth.
